COLOURANTS FOR CAMOUFLAGE APPLICATIONS

Camouflage is the process of concealment or disguise which enables articles to merge with their surroundings, thus screening them from observation.  This is normally accomplished through careful choice of colour and design when visual (400-700 nanometers) observation is the means of detection.

Considerable sophistication has been added to concealment systems as a result of the development of detection techniques utilizing the near infra red section of the spectrum (700-1200 nanometers).

Previously, only colour matching of hue and reflectance from the visual background was necessary.  With the continuing development of infra red photography and infra red night observation with red filters, pigment systems for paints, coated fabrics, and netting have been devised which conform to a variety of individual camouflage requirements.  These cover the visible and near infra red sections of the electromagnetic spectrum. Products are available covering desert and soil colours plus a range of coniferous, deciduous and grassland chlorophyll spectra.  Chlorophyll being the basic green ingredient responsible for grass and leaf colouration.
