ALUMINIUM PIGMENTS : Introduction

This site is prepared to help you evaluate available Aluminium Pigments and select the most appropriate for your specific application.  Product data is summarized on the following pages for representative grades of Silberline's more than 300 Aluminium pigments.

Understanding Aluminium Pigments

All Aluminium pigments can be divided into two general categories, i.e., leafing and non-leafing.  In the milling process, the mere substitution of one fatty acid for another will result in an Aluminium pigment with a completely different set of characteristics and aesthetics.  Because each flake type provides aesthetics unlike the other, the parameters affecting application formulations and end uses will vary according to the effects desired.

In leafing pigments, the Aluminium flakes orient themselves in a continuous layer at or nearthe surface of the film, producing an opaque silver finish. It is this opacity that makes leafing Aluminium pigments a very important functional raw material.

They are used primarily in roof coatings, maintenance and trade sales coatings where barrier protection is a critical concern.  The appearance can vary from a coarse, white look to a dark, highly spectacular, or mirror like look.  Grades of leafing Aluminium pigments with large flakes provide the least amount of hiding and the coarsest texture, but the whitest, brightest finish.  Conversely, the finest grades of leafing Aluminium pigments provide the greatest amount of hiding, smoothest texture, and polished, specular finish.

Non-leafing Aluminium pigments, which orient themselves throughout the coating film, provide aesthetics quite unlike leafing Aluminium pigments.  They can be used in a variety of systems incorporating other colors, which lends them particularly to industrial coatings and finishes.  However, it should be noted that any pigment or dye used in conjunction with non-leafing Aluminium pigments must be transparent to achieve the true metallic effect.  From low to high tinctorial strength, coarse to fine, white, very bright to grayer, more subdued shades, a variety of grades of non-leafing Aluminium pigments are available.  Non-leafing Aluminium pigments are also available in acid resistant grades, used in coatings to minimize the effects of industrial fumes, acid rain, bird droppings, or other undesirable environmental circumstances.
