ALUMINIUM PIGMENTS : Technical Information

Aluminium Pigments are manufactured from pure metal and possess many of the characteristics of the metal itelf. The typical purity of the aluminium used to manufcature the pastes and powders range from 99.3 to 99.97 % depending on the grade being manufactured.

When milled into a pigment, the most striking feature is the geometry of the particle itself. Aluminium pigments are actually aluminium flakes rather than being spherical or granular as are most other pigments. It is this flakelike shape that is responsible for many of aluminium`s characteristics.

Aluminium flakes, like the metal, have excellent corrosion - resistant properties and are highly reflective to visible light and infrared and ultraviolet radiation. Aluminium by its nature is very stable owing to the thin, tenacious oxide film formed on exposure to air.

Aluminium pigments, unlike most non - metallic pigments, have a lamellar geometry. This geometry, along with the metallic nature of the pigments, provides a combination of aesthetics and properties unlike other pigments. When incorporated into a coating, the flakes orient themselves in a multi layered position parallel to the substrate and film surface.

Aluminium Pigments are available in two categories based on the type of the coatings of the fatty acid on the aluminium flakes.
